Melodic Composition with Dice
Aleatoric composing is a fun, easy way to introduce composing using standard notation. Aleatoric composing can be done rhythmically or melodically, depending on what your goal is. All grade levels can participate in this type of composing as it is easy to adapt to the abilities and base-knowledge of your classes. We use dice, but you can used any number of things including cards, or even pieces of paper crumpled up in a hat.
The dice for fourth graders might correlate to notes on the staff, while second graders might correlate to degrees of the scale. Below are some templates that I use for this style of composing.
