MART: Music/Art Fusion
After reading The Noisy Paintbox Barb Rosenstock, we discussed synesthesia (a condition where people’s senses become confused.) In this case, Vassily Kandinsky (the painter) could hear colors.
We then looked at some famous paintings and thought about what these works would sound like if they made noise. We focused on The Scream by Edvard Munch and Waterlilies by Claude Monet.
The students then got into small groups and free composed a piece based on one of these paintings using various instruments and their voices. We then recorded these pieces, turned them into QR codes, and presented as a game on our open house. Parents scanned the QR code, listened to their child’s piece, and then determined whether they were “performing the soundtrack” to The Scream or WaterLilies.

Fifth Grade Contour Line

Students create contour lines using yarn and wrap them in aluminum foil. In art they are discussing contour lines, while in music we are discussing melodic lines. They took their project and transferred it over onto large staff paper where they graphed 15 to 30 dots (notes). They had free reign with rhythmic values.
Once their initial drafts were completed they used the app, Symphony Pro to notate the piece.
